Company Overview
AHRC New York City
Since 1949, AHRC has provided a wide range of supports to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, presently serving over 15,000 individuals and their families living throughout the city. Services include a wide scope of educational programs (pre-school, elementary, middle and high school), adult day services, day habilitation, community residences and supported apartments, employment and business services, home care, camping and recreation programs, and medical and therapeutic clinical planning and treatment. Taken together, the agency has operations in about 120 sites within New York City, staffed by about 2,500 regular full time employees and another 1,500 per diem employees.
AHRC was formed when a small group of parents joined together to obtain services for their developmentally disabled children who were then considered uneducable. Today, with a membership comprised of thousands of individuals - primarily persons with developmental disabilities, their families, friends, and professionals in the field - AHRC is one of the largest member-based nonprofit organizations in the City. It is governed by a Board of Directors (of which two-thirds of the members must be relatives of persons with developmental disabilities), working together with a staff of dedicated professionals.
Certain fundamental values characterize AHRC and guide it in the accomplishment of its mission to enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
