Position Summary:

The Chair of Pediatric Surgery at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron serves as the primary advocate for patients and families within the Department of Surgery. This position encompasses clinical and administrative oversight, leadership, and fostering excellence in clinical care, research, and education. The Chair ensures the provision of top-tier care and supports the professional development of clinical staff. Collaborating with institutional and departmental administrative team is imperative to operationalize practice efficiency, ensure patient access, and cultivate a diverse culture of workplace satisfaction. Additionally, the Chair should propose and champion clinical programs and facilitate interdepartmental collaboration with the intent of fostering clinical excellence, continuous improvement, and effective academic and educational programs.

Qualifications:

  • Board Certification in Pediatric General Surgery with fellowship training and pediatric sub-boards if available.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in pediatric surgery.
  • Strong commitment to excellence in patient care, research, and education.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Provide Vision and Leadership:

    • Develop and communicate a clear vision for the Department of Surgery aligned with the hospital's mission.
    • Contribute to maintenance and growth of clinical, research, quality and academic programs.
    • Act as a senior advisor to clinical division directors and facilitate leadership development within the department.

Administrative Oversight:

    • Collaborate with hospital and non-hospital-based services to develop strategic plans for surgical growth.
    • Collaborate with hospital and departmental administrative dyad to manage departmental operations, finances, and budgetary processes.
    • Ensure regulatory compliance and maintenance of Trauma and CSV verification.
    • Participate with Perioperative Leadership Team in management of surgical operations and block time allocation.  Opportunity to fulfill role as director of surgical operations if experience and interest support.
    • Provide mentorship, career development, and accountability to departmental clinical leadership and physicians and advanced practice providers.
    • Maintain regular cadence of departmental meeting and communication to disseminate policy, manage operations, and motivate performance and quality.
    • Lead recruitment efforts and maintain necessary staff levels for departmental activities.

Community Engagement:

    • Act as liaison between hospital administration and surgical department physicians and providers.
    • Active participant in monthly Executive Leadership Team and Senior Physician Leadership Forum Meetings.
    • Serve and participate in relevant medical staff and leadership committees.
    • Maintain collaborative relationships with NEOMED and regional universities and health systems.
    • Support hospital fundraising efforts/events.

Research Leadership:

    • Foster research activities within the department, collaborating with the Chief Research Officer and Research Institute.
    • Mentor, support, and provide accountability to departmental physician and basic scientists.

Education:

    • Promote the educational mission of the department and maintain an academic appointment at NEOMED.
    • Collaborate with the Department of Medical Education to support surgical training programs.
    • Lead the creation and implementation of an ACGME Pediatric Surgery Fellowship

Key Relationships:

  • Reports to: Surgeon in Chief
  • Direct Reports: Department Surgeons and APPs, Division Directors, Trauma Medical Director, Departmental Lead APP
  • Other Key Relationships: Department Chairs, Service Line Chiefs, Chair of Anesthesia, Senior Hospital Leadership, Chiefs of Non-Hospital Based and Hospital-Based Services, Vice Presidents of Hospital Operations, Nursing Administration, Perioperative and operating room staff.

Employment Details:

  • Full-time, employed position with administrative role requiring 0.4-0.5 FTE.
  • Clinical responsibilities expected to be maintained at 0.5-0.6 FTE.

Quality Improvement:

  • Support hospital quality and operational performance improvement.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining compliance with the hospital’s quality management programs; participate in Hospital Committees and meetings as required or requested by the Hospital.

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Other duties as may be outlined in the Medical Director job description included in the Hospital’s Human Resources Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Other duties as may be outlined in the Medical Staff Bylaws for the [Facility/the Hospital].

 

This position is a 501(c)(3) site which qualifies for Public Service Loan Forgiveness through the Federal government.
