Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all administrative and operational aspects of the non-credit, open enrollment Nurse Aide program and new nursing pathway program initiatives. This position is responsible for establishing, developing, and managing the day-to-day program and for ensuring the program complies with the Virginia Board of Nursing (VBON) accreditation standards. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Professional Development Workforce Solutions, the Coordinator plays a key role in conducting business needs assessments, identifying training opportunities, and submitting course proposals for approval by Workforce Solutions.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Curriculum
- Leads the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of the nurse aide curriculum, in collaboration with faculty and the Office of Workforce Solutions, to meet certification compliance that is consistent with college policies, Virginia Board of Nursing requirements, and employment standards.
- Provide oversight for Workforce Solutions Nurse Aide pathway as related to developing, organizing, managing, scheduling, student support, classroom supplies and materials, assessment, etc.
- In collaboration with faculty and the Office of Workforce Solutions, oversee the evaluation of Workforce Nursing pathway courses for currency, relevancy, and effectiveness. Prepare documentation for curriculum reports and changes.
Academic Standards and Assessment
- In collaboration with the Office of Workforce Solutions, communicate standards, goals, and definitions of learning outcomes and teaching requirements for the programs to ensure consistent delivery of quality instruction.
- Work with faculty, Office of Workforce Solutions, and other appropriate stakeholders in the development and implementation of effective methods and tools for measuring learning outcomes and student success.
Instructional Personnel, Supervision, and Development
- In coordination with the AVP of Workforce Solutions, manage the Workforce Solutions nursing division recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate instructional staff and additional support personnel, ensuring all instructors meet required experience and licensure criteria. Including monitoring instructor performance and conducting classroom observations.
- In collaboration with the AVP of Workforce Solutions, coordinate, execute, and encourage participation of Workforce Nurse Aid instructors in meaningful and engaging seminars, lectures, workshops, training, and other relevant opportunities.
Workforce Support
- Ensure that appropriate support services are in place and are consistently and effectively applied. Coordinate support in areas such as testing preparation, writing labs, math labs, tutoring, etc.
- Collaborate with Workforce student services personnel to ensure students are appropriately advised.
- Review, research, respond, and resolve student concerns within the scope and purview of the position and refer student concerns to the appropriate offices throughout the college.
Operational Oversight
- In collaboration with the college and Workforce’s fiscal department, assist in the procurement of materials and supplies needed for efficient operations.
- Ensure all courses meet applicable standards and requirements of the Virginia Board of Nursing, VCCS, and Tidewater Community College. Act as the primary liaison to state agencies (i.e., Board of Nursing, Department of Health) to ensure all program activities, curriculum, and documentation align with state and federal regulations. Including preparing required reports and coordinating for site visits or audits.
- Develop and implement strategies to increase awareness and enrollment among current and potential students and coordinate efforts with the Workforce marketing department and web services to include collaboration on development of marketing materials.
- Develop, implement, evaluate program requirements, and maintain all program records in accordance with TCC and the Virginia Board of Nursing.
- Compile and deliver written reports, oral briefs, and make presentations.
- Coordinate with TCC, Dean of the Beazly School of Nursing, to ensure appropriate program crosswalks following all procedures/policies.
Budget Development and Oversight
- Collaborating with the AVP of Workforce Solutions and the college and Workforce fiscal department to analyze the resources needed to fulfill the academic obligations, including the development of cost-benefit analyses and forecasts of Workforce program demand in the nursing career pathway.
- Monitor expenditures, assess fiscal trends, and work with the AVP of Workforce Solutions to take action to assure budget integrity.
Community Relationships, Clinical Site Management, and Partnerships
- In coordination with the AVP of Workforce Solutions establish and build relationships with employers, community agencies, educational institutions (e.g., K12, colleges and universities), program accrediting bodies, municipalities, and governmental and military organizations to foster partnerships, job placements, to review and improve curricula, to create opportunities for experiential learning (such as internships, externships, clinical site placements, and apprenticeships), and to establish contract training opportunities. Coordinate these efforts with appropriate areas of the college, such as Academic Affairs (Nursing pathway), and the Center for Military and Veterans Education.
- Development and maintain strong partnerships with healthcare facilities for clinical placements, manage student placement logistics, and ensure students and faculty adhere to all health and safety requirements of clinical sites. In coordination with the AVP of Workforce Solutions, negotiate agreements with clinical sites as needed.
- Establish and maintain contact with employers in the healthcare sector to identify industry training needs and training opportunities; identify TCC resources to meet these needs and develop appropriate training proposals.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
KSA's/Required Qualifications
- A master’s degree in a related field, preferably nursing, from a regionally accredited college or university is required.
- Hold a current, unrestricted Virginia RN license or multistate licensure privilege as a registered nurse.
- Have two years of experience as a registered nurse and at least one year of direct client care or supervisory experience in the provision of long-term care services.
- Demonstrated knowledge of community college curricula, instructional practices, and learning outcomes in programs assigned to the nursing healthcare sector.
- Ability to develop courses, coordinate scheduling, supervise staff, and manage budgets.
- Excellent skills in oral and written communication.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures; ability to resolve issues, resulting in mutual respect and tolerance for varying points of view.
- Knowledge of and ability to utilize administrative and instructional applications of information technology.
- Familiarity with accreditation, certification, and licensure requirement
